The Matterhorn, or Cervino in Italian, lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The summit of the Matterhorn is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high, which makes it one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. This photograph of the Matterhorn in black & white is a long exposure photograph. The clouds and fog surrounding the mountain appear smoother as a result. The photo is also less busy, because of it. The black & white rendering makes this iconic mountain stand out better against its background.
The viewpoint in this mountain landscape is somewhere along a hike on the Gornergrat in Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. The photograph shows the east and north faces of the Matterhorn, by the way.
Interested in seeing a different perspective on the Matterhorn? Then have a look at the photograph titled Standing out! That photograph features the Matterhorn as well, but with a different composition with snow in the foreground.

Johan, after climbing and mountaineering for 30 years, owning a climbing shop, and designing climbing gear for 14 years or so, I have looked at many thousands of mountain shots… in my office today I have a photo taken by Michael Kennedy, Jeff Lowe and his pack with broad peak looming behind…
Your photograph remains one of my favourite images of any alpine scene… really classic Matterhorn image Johan …..
