Background

The Alps in winter usually are a very chilly place to be, especially on higher altitudes. This alpine winter scene features the only larch tree that managed to survive under harsh winter conditions. It is the last one standing tall amongst the highest peaks of Switzerland. Hence the title “The Last One”.

The mountain range in the back is the Monte Rosa. Monte Rosa is a mountain massif located in the eastern part of the Pennine Alps, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. Monte Rosa is the second highest mountain in the Alps and Europe. Its dominant peak, the Dufourspitze, has an altitude of 4,634 metres (15,203 ft).

It was a cold and foggy winter day when this photograph of the Alps in winter was taken. The larch tree stands in the deep snow and looks tiny against the background of these massive Swiss Alps. The view shown in this photograph is located along the Simplon pass road in the Swiss Canton of Valais.
